A First-of-Its-Kind Cruise in French Polynesia
Starting in 2027, a new expedition vessel operated in cooperation with Aranui Cruises will sail the waters of the South Pacific. This is the very first project fully dedicated to the Austral Islands – an archipelago that has largely remained outside mass tourism.
The voyage is designed as a cargo–passenger cruise, combining freight transport with passenger travel. In addition to welcoming guests on board, the ship supplies remote islands, naturally becoming part of everyday local life. The project focuses on sustainable tourism, supporting local communities and preserving Polynesian identity.
13 Days Among the Most Remote Islands of Polynesia
During the 13-day cruise, the ship visits the most fascinating islands of the Austral archipelago. The itinerary may vary depending on the departure date, but typically includes:
- Rurutu – an island of dramatic cliffs, caves, and traditional basket weaving
- Rimatara – a small, peaceful island with authentic villages and endemic bird species
- Tubuai – the largest island of the archipelago, rich in culture, crafts, and history
- Raivavae – often referred to as the “Bora Bora of the past,” famous for its exceptional lagoon
- Rapa – the most remote and least visited island of Polynesia (available on selected departures only)
Cruises depart from Tahiti, and several special themed sailings are planned for 2027, including:
- Gambier & Pitcairn (July and September 2027)
- Marquesas Festival – Hiva Oa (December 2027)
An Atmosphere You Won’t Experience Anywhere Else
One of the strongest elements of the cruise is the authentic Polynesian atmosphere on board. Most of the crew come from different parts of Polynesia and share their culture with guests in a natural and unforced way.
Onboard activities may include:
- cultural performances
- traditional music and dance
- local cuisine
- social gatherings and storytelling about island life
This is not a staged show for tourists, but a genuine sharing of Polynesian culture.
The Aranui Ship: Modern Comfort in the Middle of the Ocean
The Aranui offers comfort comparable to modern cruise ships, but in a more intimate and personal setting. With a capacity of approximately 200 passengers, the ship typically features:
- various cabin categories, from standard rooms to luxury balcony suites
- two restaurants
- bars
- spa and wellness facilities
- a gym and whirlpools
The interiors combine modern design with Polynesian elements, further enhancing the overall experience.
Who Is This Cruise Ideal For?
This journey is not for everyone – and that is exactly what makes it so special. It is ideal for travelers who:
- have already visited Tahiti or Bora Bora and want to explore further
- are looking for authentic destinations beyond the main tourist routes
- prefer sustainable and meaningful travel
- want to experience real life in remote parts of Polynesia
Conclusion: Discover a Different Side of French Polynesia
The Austral Islands are among the last truly untouched regions of the South Pacific. Thanks to this new cruise, travelers can explore them comfortably, safely, and with respect for local communities.
If you are drawn to a combination of adventure, culture, and the open ocean, this journey has all the potential to become a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
